While I was over at my parents' house yesterday my mom showed me a really cute idea from Southern Living - using colanders instead of your regular hanging basket to grow strawberries! I don't have the photo they used, but it looked something along this line:

Now I'm sure you can plant whatever your heart desires in your colander, but I like the idea of going in our backyard and being able to pick and eat one of my favorite berries for free!

Wouldn't one or two of these colorful colanders look so cute hanging from our porch or clothesline? It would definitely give our oh-so-bleak backyard some color during the winter (yep, you can grow strawberries
now - in the dead of winter - and they'll be ready for a late spring/early summer pickin'). Southern Living suggests planting Allstar, Apollo, Sunrise or Surecrop for our area.
You can bet I'll be out on the hunt for one of these and a couple of those strawberry plants next week...
